On July 28, 2010 Azamat Azimov, the political activist and the member of Shakhrisab department (Kashkadaria Oblast) of Birdamlik opposition movement was sentenced to 7 years of prison, Bakhodyr Choriev, the leader of Birdamlik, informed Ferghana.Ru.
«The court held session and made decision within one day, which was enough for judge Diyarov to sentence Azamat for 7 years on faked charges on article 270, point 5 (cultivation of prohibited plants) and article 273 point 5 (illegal preparation, acquisition and storage of drugs and psychotropic substances with the purpose of sale) under Uzbek criminal code», said Choriev.
Azamat Azimov was arrested in April of 2010. The Birdamlik members learned about his arrest only one month later. The family of the political activist kept silence because in exchange the investigator Djasur Shakhsanov promised to help Azamat.
Choriev is affirmed that this is the punishment for Azamat’s political activities.
«I do not believe Azamat is able to run drugs business. Recently, he became the father. This person would never commit illegal actions. He gained respect in his mahallah among friends and neighbors for his commitment to justice», the Birdamlik leader says.
Azamat Azimov was also tortured during the investigation period, said his relatives, reporting dramatic deterioration of his health.
«Unfortunately, the lawyer Davron Tursunov, appointed by the state, showed no initiatives since he was afraid to stand against the system. We are going to continue fighting for the freedom of our member», Choriev noted.
