UN declares 2nd Oct as ‘INTERNATIONAL NON-VIOLENCE DAY’
Suggested Programme for Schools & Colleges
INTRODUCTION
In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2nd October (Gandhi Jayanti) as an ‘International Day of Non-Violence’. It is a real tribute to the apostle of Peace. The day is meant to raise awareness of non-violence, tolerance, full respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, democracy, development, mutual understanding and respect of diversity through education and public awareness. Today, when electronic media like T.V., Cinema and video games are making a devious effect on students’ minds by turning them abnormally hostile, intolerant and violent; value education has become the need of the hour. Value Education strives to sustain morality and peaceful conflict resolution.
Mahatma Gandhi’s values of Truth, Non-Violence & Conflict Resolution can serve as best instruments for such education because Gandhi has been the role-model, not only for the Indian masses, but also for international figures such as Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela etc.
Theme: From Non-Violence to Humanity (Deefnbmee mes ceeveJelee lekeÀ)
